Worcester worked as a missionary for the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions from 1825 to 1859, serving the Cherokee Nation at Brainerd Mission, Tennessee; New Echota, Georgia; and in Indian Territory [Oklahoma]. During the state of Georgia's attempt to remove the Cherokee, Worcester refused to cooperate fully and was imprisoned from 1831 to 1833. Ebenezer Porter was appointed professor of sacred rhetoric at Andover Theological Seminary in 1812 and became its president in 1827, at which post he remained until his death.
